MARGARET GABRIEL WAS TEACHER IN COUNTY SCHOOLS

Funeral services for Mrs. Conrad Gabriel were conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Deep River Presbyterian church by the Rev. James Glass. Mrs. George Dale played the musical selections.

Interment was in the family lot in Golden Rod cemetery under direction of the Steffy Funeral Home. Casket bearers were Quentin Rose, Bob McWilliams, Carl Baustian, Burdett Cranston, Paul Bruns and Claudis Axtell.

Margaret Doughtery Gabriel, daughter of John A. and Mary (Reynolds) Doughtery, was born in Lincoln township, Poweshiek county Mar. 13, 1871.

She was one of 10 children, there being six sons and four daughters. She attended the public schools in Lincoln township, and after graduation, taught in the rural schools in Poweshiek and Iowa counties for seven years.

She was married to Conrad Gabriel, a widower, Mar. 20, 1895, who had three children, namely, Leo A., who was 10 years of age, and is now deceased; Eva, eight years of age, now Eva Bales, Deep River, and Mabel, five years of age, now Mrs. A.T. House, Fresno, Calif.

Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel lived on a farm in Dayton twp. in Iowa county. Mrs. Gabriel became a true mother to the three children. Because of her former teaching experience she had great interest in education and assisted the children in their educational efforts. The family attended religious services regularly and practiced religious precepts in the home.

Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel continued to reside on the farm until advancing years caused them to retire to the town of Deep River, where they took an active part in church, civic and other community affairs. She and her husband were active members of the United Presbyterian church.

After Mr. Gabriel's death Jan. 14, 1945, Mrs. Gabriel continued to take an active interest in civic and community affairs until advancing years compelled her to give up these activities.

She died in her home Jan. 15, being 91 years, 10 months and 12 days, of age. Besides the daughters, she is survived by a brother, Lee Dougherty, Montezuma; a sister, Leona Shedenhelm, Grinnell; several nieces and nephews, and a large number of friends.
