DEATH CALLS MRS. MARY DOUGHERTY

Mrs. Mary Dougherty was buried Monday, December 23rd, services being conducted from her home where she had lived for 63 years. The Rev. Mr. VanDyke of Ewart officiated, and she was laid to rest beside her husband in the Guernsey cemetery.

Mrs. Dougherty was born in Pennsylvania on August 26, 1834. When twelve years old she came west, coming down the Ohio in a flat boat and up the Mississippi to Davenport. Her people settled near Davenport at Blue Grass. Here she was married in 1855. She and her husband lived successively in Oskaloosa, Kansas and Oskaloosa again in the eleven years before they came to Poweshiek county in 1866. They must have been in Kansas during the stormy period before the Civil War. In 1866 they moved to the farm where she lived for 66 years, Mr. Dougherty dying in 1906.

There was a family of ten children, two of whom are dead, and one son, Ross, whose home is in Oregon, was not able to be present at the funeral services.

Four years ago Mrs. Dougherty suffered a stroke from which she never fully recovered and two weeks ago she suffered another one and after that failed rapidly.

After the death of her husband, Mrs. Dougherty remained on the farm with an unmarried daughter, and until ten years ago her son, Frank Dougherty farmed there. Just this year a daughter, Mrs. Conrad Gabriel, and her husband, moved from Deep River onto the farm. Last summer Mrs. Dougherty celebrated her 95th birthday and seemed in good health. She was a remarkable woman for her years, retaining her faculties and enjoying life. She was a United Presbyterian in her church affiliations and has many friends in and around Guernsey who will miss her greatly.

Those who attended her funeral from away were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Blackwood of Newton, Hugh Sanders of Grinnell, Will Dougherty of Oakton, S. Dak., John Dougherty of Tipton, and Mr. and Mrs. Stodder of Kellogg. From Brooklyn the L.R. Dougherty family attended, Mrs. Fred Breniman and Mrs. Neal Willett and Frank Dougherty of Ladora.--Montezuma Republican.
