LAVERNE J. LOFTIN

A memorial service was held Sunday afternoon, Sept. 19, at Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn for LaVerne J. Loftin, 73, who died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at home following a lengthy battle with cancer. The Rev. William Daylong and Pastor Carol Wehr of the Malcom-Sheridan Parish officiated.

LaVerne was born April 30, 1926, in rural Grinnell, the son of Grover E. Loftin and Rosa E. Snook. He married his high school sweetheart, Esther M. Johnson, on Oct. 2, 1945, in Iowa City.

LaVerne and Esther farmed east of Brooklyn for two years before moving to his present farm northeast of Grinnell in 1948.

LaVerne enjoyed farming with his family, hunting, fishing, and family picnics with softball games. He also enjoyed playing an active role in his church activities such as Bible study, Kids' Camp, and Emmaus. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn, and the Malcom Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Walter, and a sister, Ellen Kriegel.

LaVerne is survived by his wife, Esther; his children, Larry, Duane, Roger, Marcia Puls and Brenda Paulson, all of Grinnell; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his brother, Grover J. Loftin.

Memorials may be made to Grinnell Hospice.
