FLOYD SHARP

Floyd Sharp, 82, of Grinnell died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton after a lengthy battle with cancer.

A funeral service was held Thursday morning, Aug. 16, at Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Susan Sanning, chaplain of Grinnell Regional Hospice, officiating. Interment was in Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Jasper County in care of Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell 50112. On-line condolences may be submitted via Smith Funeral Home's website.

He was born in Grinnell on Feb. 2, 1925, the son of Isaac and Bonnie Smith Sharp. He was raised and educated in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1943. He served in the United States Coast Guard, first in Portsmouth, Va., then on the USS General G.M. Randall and in the China-Burma-India Theater. He was transferred to USS-LST-78, serving throughout the Pacific Theater for the remainder of World War II.

On military leave at home he was married to Barbara Carter and to this union were born three children, Kathryn, Bonnie and Sara. Following the war, he was employed by Iowa Southern Utilities in Grinnell for almost 40 years. He later was married to Marilyn Krumm and the couple had two sons, John and Timothy. He later was united in marriage with Pauline Jantzen on Sept. 6, 1973.

He was a car enthusiast who enjoyed attending car shows and reading car magazines. He also enjoyed gardening and was a St. Louis Cardinals fan.

He is survived by his wife Pauline Sharp of Grinnell; his daughters Kathy Allen, Bonnie Barnett and Sara Seals of Newton; his son Timothy Todd; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother James Sharp of Newton and one sister, Opal Lusk of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Jon Loren and his sisters, Doris Krumm and Alma Bates.
