VIOLA M. ARMSTRONG

Viola M. Armstrong, 85, of Grinnell died Saturday, June 28, 2008, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services for Viola Armstrong will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, at the Grinnell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Len Eberhart officiating. Pallbearers will include Bryan and Bryce Armstrong; Dennis and Mike Ashby, Colin Belcher, Robbin Eppinga, Paul Ruble, Kevin Sterk, and Adam and Scott Wahl. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today (Monday) at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Born March 10, 1923, in Hartwick, she was the daughter of Walter and Alma Hakeman Ruble. She later moved to Grinnell and was a 1942 graduate of Grinnell High School.

On April 19, 1948, she married Harold "Melvin" Armstrong in Grinnell. The couple lived in Marion, S.D., and Brooklyn, Iowa, before returning to Grinnell in 1953. She was employed at Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company for 18 years and retired in 1975.

She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and the Jewell Box Quilters Guild. She was an avid sports fan and a loyal follower of the Chicago Cubs. She also enjoyed craftwork including quilting, needlepoint and crocheting. She also read, played cards and fished, and is remembered as a good-hearted and giving person who was proud of her family.

She is survived by five children, Ginger Sterk of Grinnell, Steven Armstrong of Kent, Wash., Tim Armstrong of Grinnell, Chrystal Wahl of Davenport and Melanie Belcher of Grinnell; two sisters, Mary Margaret Ashby of Grinnell and Phyllis Collier of Penryn, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a grandson; a brother, Oscar Ruble; and two sisters, Maxine Dietrich and her twin, Violet Krumm.
