ELVERNA GARLOCK

Elverna Garlock, 81, of Los Angeles, a former Grinnell teacher, died Monday, Sept. 22, at the Hollenbeck Home in Los Angeles following a long illness.

Visitation will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Private graveside services will follow at Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of Fred and Isabelle Hegland Mangold, she was born Sept. 21, 1916, in Sioux Rapids. She was raised and received her education in Linn Grove, graduating from Linn Grove High School in 1935.

After attending Buena Vista College for two years, she returned home to care for her mother following her father's death. She also taught in the Cherokee school system.

On May 2, 1941, she was married to Edward Charles Garlock in South Sioux City, Neb. They lived in Mallard where Mr. Garlock ran the Mallard Lumber Co. and she taught school.

The family moved to Grinnell in 1956. After two years of teaching in Malcom, Mrs. Garlock joined the Grinnell-Newburg School District in 1962. She taught second grade during her 23-year career in Grinnell, first at Davis School and then at Fairview School. While teaching, she returned to college and received her B.A. degree in education from Drake University in 1967. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

Following her retirement, she moved first to Mankato, Minn., in 1989, then to Los Angeles in 1990.

Surviving are four children, Elwood of Cedar Rapids, Eilene Abel of Mankato, Minn., Elyse Garlock of South Pasadena, Calif., and Edward of Pasadena; seven grandchildren; and two brothers, Sanfern Mangold of Cherokee and Wilfred Mangold of Armstrong.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and three brothers, Milfred, Clifford and Arland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Elverna Garlock Library Book Fund, Grinnell-Newburg School District.
