LOCAL MAN HUNTING ALONE

HUNTER DIES IN ACCIDENT

Shotgun Blast Sunday Kills Edw. Garlock

A Grinnell man was killed instantly early Sunday afternoon in a hunting accident northwest of Baxter in Marshall county.

ALONE AT TIME

Victim was Edward C. Garlock, 52, of 1318 East Street, who was killed when his 12-gauge shotgun accidentally discharged while he was crawling thru a fence. Garlock was alone at the time.

According to Marshall County Sheriff Asa Landes, Garlock's body was discovered by a passing farmer. The farmer had passed the scene a few minutes earlier and at that time saw Garlock preparing to get out of his car. He came back by the scene about 15 minutes later and found the body.

Dr. Harold E. Sauer, Marshall county Medical Examiner, said the shotgun blast struck the victim in the head.

WAS SALESMAN

Garlock was employed as a feed salesman.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wedneday from St. John's Lutheran church here. Interment will be in Hazelwood cemetery.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the St. John's Lutheran Church Building Fund.

The son of Elwood and Jennie Hubbell Garlock, he was born on Feb. 1st, 1913, at Plover, Iowa. He attended the Plover schools, graduating from Plover high school and the University of Iowa.

EDUCATOR

After completion of his education, he served as principal and coach for seven years in the Curlew, Rembrandt and Mallard communities. For a time he was also in the lumber busienss with his father at Mallard.

In 1955, the family moved to Grinnell.

On May 34, 1941, at South Sioux City, Nebr., he was united in marriage with Elverna Mangold. To this union, four children were born: Elwood and Eilene, students at the University of Iowa; Edward, a student at Phillips Exeter Academy; and Elyse, a student at Grinnell high school.

OTHER SURVIVORS

In additon to his wife and children, he is survived by his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Garlock of Cherokee, Iowa; and two brothers, A.O. Garlock of Plover and Larry Garlock of Waterloo.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran church, St. John's Brotherhood, sponsor for St. Johns' Luther League, and had served as a church councilman. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Abu Beker Shrine of Sioux City, The Commandery, American Legion, the 40 and 8, and was an assistant Boy Scout leader.

During World War II he served with the United States Army.
