VERTIE SHADDEN

Vertie M. Shadden, 99, of Tama died Wednesday, Aug. 14, at Grinnell General Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. A. Cliff Bevins, pastor of the Grinnell First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of Thomas Sherman and Carrie Alice Nichols Wright, she was born April 18, 1892, near Hartford, Mo. She attended rural school.

On April 18, 1908, she was married to David Shadden. The couple farmed in Missouri before coming to Sheridan Township in 1911 to farm. They later moved to a farm in Tama county prior to moving to Tama in 1941.

Mrs. Shadden was a cook for the Tama elementary schools and also worked for Grinnell College's food service department for several years.

She is survived by three daughters, Faye Fair of Grinnell, Geneva Backen of rural Tama and Carolyn (Betty) Depew of Council Bluffs; three sons, Darl of rural Tama, Verlyn of rural Tama and Robert of Zapata, Texas; one brother, Versel M. Wright of Grinnell; 17 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren and 34 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two daughters, Ferne Shadden and Lenora Shope; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Von Wright; and six sisters, Verna Crooks, Vida Wright, Violet Roop, Villard Wright, Vesta Thompson and Vellee Wright.
