DAVID SHADDEN

David Shadden, son of Robert and Elizabeth Haines Shadden, was born March 24, 1886, in Putnam County, Missouri. He received his education and grew to manhood in the community in which he was born. When a young man he professed Christ and was raised in the Baptist faith.

On April 18, 1908, he was united in marriage with Vertie Wright at Glendale, Mo. They began their married life on a farm in Putnam County. In 1911 they moved to Iowa where they continued farming in Poweshiek and Tama Counties. In 1941 they moved to Tama where they have made their home ever since.

Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Shadden: twin daughters, Ferne, who preceded him in death in 1933, and Mrs. Jerry (Faye) Fair, Grinnell, Mrs. Hubert (Lenora) Shope, Sheridan, Darl, Robert and Mrs. Edwin (Geneva) Backen, all of Tama, Verlyn, of Toledo, and Mrs. Marvin (Betty) Depew of Council Bluffs.

Mr. Shadden has been in recurring ill health since 1930, causing repeated stays in the hospital. He spent their recent 49th wedding anniversary in the University hospital at Iowa City with his wife by his bedside.

He is survived by his companion, seven children, 17 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and four nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters. He passed away June 7, 1957 at his Tama home, past 71 years of age.

Funeral services were conducted on June 10th at Tama with the Rev. C.E. Kingsley of Grinnell officiating. Interment was at Hazelwood cemetery.
