JOHN PETERS SERVICES SET

John H. Peters, 77, of 802 Reed St., died Saturday, July 6, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

The son of William C. and Fredricka Miller Peters, he was born Aug. 23, 1896, on a farm southwest of Grinnell. He lived his entire life in Poweshiek County. He received his education in the Grinnell public schools, and during World War I he served in the U.S. Navy.

On Oct. 2, 1920, he was married to Mary Kathryn Hutchison in Des Moines. The couple had two children, Robert W. Peters of Camarillo, Calif., and Mrs. Loring (Ann) Rohr of Grinnell. His wife preceded him in death on May 3, 1959. On May 2, 1962, he was married to Mary S. Benton at the West Des Moines Methodist Church.

He was an employee of the Post Office for 42 years, retiring 11 years ago. He was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association.

Mr. Peters was a member of the United Methodist Church, and he served as treasurer of the church for 25 years. He was the official weather observer for Grinnell for more than 20 years. He was a 50-year member of the Knights of Pythias; a 50-year member of the American Legion; a member of the Masonic Lodge, Hermon Lodge No. 273 of Grinnell; and he had the 32nd degree in the Scottish Rite of the Des Moines Consistory.

Survivors include his wife Mary; his son Robert; his daughter Ann; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; three step-children, Clifford Benton of San Rafael, Calif., Mrs. Richard (Janet) Sayers of La Mesa, Calif., and Nancy Clarke of Santa Monica, Calif.; and 10 step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents and three brothers.

Funeral services for Mr. Peters will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. John W. McCallum of the United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. Masonic rites will be conducted by members of Hermon Lodge No. 273.
