MIKE WHERRY RITES PENDING

Merrill D. (Mike) Wherry, 56, of Oakland Acres died of a heart attack Friday evening, March 22, while visiting his sister at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services are pending at the Smith Funeral Home, where friends may call for additional information.

The son of Grant O. and Neva Johnson Wherry, he was born Aug. 15, 1928, at Guernsey. In 1931 the family moved to Deep River where he graduated from Deep River High School.

In 1946, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, retiring after 20 years with Military Police counterintelligence. Much of his military life was spent in Japan where he met and married Sueko Ubukata on July 20, 1964.

Following his discarge from the service, he worked briefly for the Pinkerton Detective Agency and for Wilcox-Garland Furniture in Grinnell. He began working for the U.S. Postal Service in Grinnell in December 1968. He was employed by the Postal Service at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Michael Grant Wherry of Oakland Acres; and one sister, Pauline Hart of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by is parents and his step-mother, Edna Wherry.

Mr. Wherry was a member of Focht-Tennant Post No. 53, American Legion.
