Funeral services were held for James Russell Cheney, 62, Deep River on Friday, April 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the Calvary Church, Deep River with Pastor Alan Hafner officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Catherine Shaull, organist, with selections of "In The Garden" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Flower attendants were Lee and Bev King and Bob and Carol Brennan. Casket bearers were Bud Cheney, Lee Roy Cheney, Richard Cheney, Ned Schultz, Bill Schultz and Cliff Schultz. Honorary casket bearers were Clayton Cheney, Jodi Cheney, Kali Montegomery, Jonathan Cheney, Jordan Montgomery and Maddux Baggs. Interment was in Golden Rod Cemetery, Deep River, with arrangements by Watts Funeral Home, Montezuma.

James Cheney died Tuesday, April 17, 2001 from injuries received in a tractor accident east of Deep River.

Memorials may be directed to the Deep River Volunteer Fire Department or the Calvary Lutheran Church.

He was born March 4, 1939 at Deep River, the son of Kenneth (Mike) and Duane (Pierce) Cheney. He graduated from Deep River High School in 1956 and served in the Army from 1959 to 1961.

On June 4, 1959 he was united in marriage with Arva Schultz at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Deep River. To this untion five children were born: Lonnie Ray, Wayne Allan, Rex William, Marna Sue and Colleen Louise. Jim and Arva farmed all of their married life northeast of Deep River.

Jim was baptized as an infant and received his confirmation of faith on Nov. 25, 1962. He was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church and Farm Bureau, and served as trustee and clerk of Deep River Township since 1964. He enjoyed his work as a Golden Harvest Seed Corn dealer for the past four years.

Jim was an enthusiastic and strong family man who enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved to golf and enjoyed playing in the men's league at Knoll Ridge Country Club in North English. He was happy on the dance floor, as well as the golf course.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Lonnie.

Jim is survived by his wife, Arva, and their family, Wayne and Kristy Cheney, Montezuma, Rex and Julie Cheney, Deep River, Marna and Kyle Montgomery, Brooklyn and Colleen and John Baggs, Duluth, Minn.; six grandchildren, Clayton Cheney, Jonathan and Jodi Cheney, Jordan and Kali Montgomery, and Maddux Baggs; three brothers, Kenneth Jr. (Bud) Cheney and his wife Judy, Deep River, Lee Roy and Linda Cheney, Deep River, and Richard and Jenny Cheney, Deep River; two sisters, Dorothy and her husband Don Van Zee, Cedar Rapids and Donna and Ron Benton, Guthrie Center; nieces and nephews and other relatives and many friends.
