MONTEZUMA MAN KILLED IN CRASH OF VAN, TRACTOR

Lee Roy Cheney, 57, of Montezuma died late Tuesday afternoon in a van-tractor crash three miles north of Montezuma.

According to Trooper Matt Schwenn of the Iowa State Patrol, Cheney was northbound on Highway 21, driving a John Deere tractor and pulling a grain mixer. A 2000 Chevrolet van driven by Bruce Leslie Pomeroy, 69, of Cedar Rapids was also northbound on the highway and rear-ended the grain mixer.

Schwenn said that Cheney had no lights on the rear of the tractor or the mixer. Pomeroy attempted to avoid a collision by going to the left, but collided with the rear of the mixer. The tractor separated from the mixer and rolled onto its side, coming to a rest on the west shoulder. The grain mixer came to a rest on the east shoulder.

Cheney was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both vehicles and the mixer were demolished in the crash. Pomeroy, who was wearing a seat belt, escaped serious injury.

Also at the scene were the Poweshiek County Sheriff's Office, the Deep River Volunteer Fire Department and the Brooklyn Ambulance Service.
