OBITUARY

H.L. LEWIS

Harmon L. Lewis, was born near Cleveland, O., April 10th, 1851, and died at Grinnell, Iowa, August 24th, 1908. He was united in marriage to Mary Catharine Williams, January 27, 1876, in Rock Island county, Ill. To this union were born two sons, A.F. Lewis, now living in Canada, and C.L. Lewis, living in Chester township of this county.

Mr. Lewis and family came to Iowa in 1879, and for 29 years has lived in the vicinity of Grinnell, where he was engaged either as farmer or in business life.

The deceased was one of a large family, having seven sisters and three brothers. His father, mother and six sisters have preceded him to the spirit land. He leaves a wife, two sons, an adopted daughter, Harriett M. Lewis, and step-mother, together with a host of friends, to mourn his loss.

But while they thus mourn they believe their loss to be his gain, for at the time of his death he was a member of the Congregational church at Chester Center, where he had proved his loyalty to the church and the Master whom he served.

"Harm" Lewis, as he was so familiarly called by all who knew him, was a man without an enemy. To know him was to admire and love him. Broad-minded, public spirited, honest, and with a charity in his soul that caused him to think kindly of all men, none ever heard him speak other than kind words of every man.

Thus has passed another of the old residents of Iowa, who have shared in giving character to society and community.

Those from a distance who came to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. David Moore and Miss Ilo Webster of Medical Lake, Wash.; Miss Dora Webster, of Swink, Colo.; Mrs. John Victor and little son, Kenneth, of Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. A. Pitman, of Preemption, Ill.; Locke Lewis, of Lake Park, Iowa.
