BERT J. BARNES

Bert J. Barnes, 76, of Rte. 4, Newton, a native of rural Gilman, died Thursday, Feb. 25, at Rio Grande Regional Hospital, McAllen, Texas, following a stroke.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at Reese Chapel in Newton, with the Rev. Jerry Brown, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Newton, officiating. Burial was in Prairie View Cemetery, Gilman.

He was the son of Bert and Hattie Seibring (Sebring) Barnes and was born April 4, 1916, in rural Gilman. He had lived in Newton since 1949.

Mr. Barnes was married to Lenora Shank in 1940 and to Betty Beukema Sept. 7, 1949, in Edina, Minn. He was a carpenter and worked for Van Gorp Construction for 30 years, retiring in 1981.

Surviving are his wife, Betty; one son, Dennis of Marshalltown; two grandchildren; and one brother, Jake of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Memorials in his name may be made to the American Heart Association.
