RITES MONDAY

Ethel Barnes, 72, of Gilman died of an apparent heart attack Friday, Dec. 5, at her home.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Gilman with the Rev. Rick Burns officiating. Organist was Janice Everts, and vocalist was Genevieve Weaver. Pallbearers were Denny Barnes, Rick Barnes, Terry Collins, Harley Everts, Don Gibbs, Leon Herndon, Denny Mairs and Gary Parmenter.

Burial was in Prairie View Cemetery at Gilman, with the Smith Funeral Home of Grinnell in charge of arrangements. Memorials in Mrs. Barnes's name may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Alex and Eleanor (Nellie) Parker Mairs, she was born on Oct. 5, 1914, near Gilman. She attended Newburg and Gilman schools, graduating from Gilman High School in 1933.

On June 3, 1933, she was married to Harold Lee Barnes in Milan, Mo. The couple farmed for 30 years near Gilman, moving into Gilman two years ago. Mrs. Barnes was a member of the Gilman United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband; two children, Robert R. of Vermillion, S.D., and Betty Jean Spence of Eldora; nine grandchildren; and one brother, Raymond Mairs of Gilman. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Howard and Robert Mairs; and three sisters, Ellen Ramsel and two in infancy.
