ANNA BELLE BARNES

Anna Belle Barnes, 84, of Grinnell died Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service was held Monday, March 15, at the Grinnell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Len Eberhart, pastor, officiating. Organ music was by Margaret Wheeler and vocal music by Delmar and Norma Sharp. Casket bearers were Dave Billman, Don, Larry and Randy Cummings, Dick Kelm, Mark Parmenter and Larry Peebles. Burial was in Prairie View Cemetery at Gilman. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church or Shriners' Crippled Chrildren's Hospital.

She was born Feb. 12, 1920, in Jasper County near Monroe to William and Nola Kain May. She attended rural schools in Jasper County. She lived in California during her high school years, graduating from Long Beach High School, after which she was married to Woodrow Jones. After the marriage ended in divorce, she moved to Grinnell. On March 22, 1948, she was married to Walter (Jake) Barnes in Long Beach. The coupled lived in Grinnell where they owned and operated two gas stations and a tank-wagon service. She also worked in the food service of the Grinnell-Newburg Schools and as a sales clerk for Squires Home Decorating and Graham's Department Store.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and Netaker Temple #11, Daughters of the Nile.

She is survived by one son, Rick Barnes of Grinnell; three daughters, Linda Harbin of Grinnell, Diane Ewalt of Mansfield, Texas, and Alyce Van Gilder of Denver, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Beverly Lyons of Kingsport, Tenn., and Carol Hampton of Stafford, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother, Howard May, and one sister, Maxine Dickerson.
