WALTER A. BARNES

Walter A. "Jake" Barnes, 87, of rural Grinnell died of a stroke Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Grinnell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Del Dawes officiating. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery, Gilman.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home beginning Thursday, and the family will be present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A Masonic service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

The son of Bert and Hattie Sebring Barnes, he was born Dec. 11, 1909, in Gilman. He was raised in Gilman and graduated from Gilman High School in 1930. He then began working for Tharp Oil Co. at Gilman. He served with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Louisville in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

He was married to Annabelle May, March 22, 1948, at Long Beach, Calif. The couple lived in Grinnell where he operated a Standard Oil business until 1964 when he owned and operated Barnes Phillips 66 Gas Stations and Tankwagon Service. He retired in 1994.

Mr. Barnes was a member of the United Methodist Church of Grinnell, the Masonic Lodge and the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine of Des Moines. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Shrine Trike Patrol.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Beverly Lyons of Kingsport, Tenn., Carol Hampton of Safford, Ariz., and Linda Harbin of Grinnell; one son, Richard of Grinnell; two stepdaughers, Diane Ewalt of San Diego, Calif., and Alyce Van Gilder of Denver, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Blanche Parmenter and Margaret Everts; and three brothers, Clyde, Harold and Bert.
