RACHEL VEVERKA

Rachel VeVerka, 94, of Montezuma passed away Sunday, January 31, 2010 at the Montezuma Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Montezuma. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 4, 2010 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Interment will be held in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Montezuma United Methodist Church.

Rachel Bertha VeVerka, daughter of Robert and Sarah (Johnston) Hicks was born on April 20, 1915 in Montezuma. She was a 1934 graduate of Montezuma High School. On February 23, 1938, she was united in marriage to Sylvan Eldred VeVerka in Montezuma. Together they farmed the Hicks family farm near Montezuma. She was a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church, Poweshiek County Farm Bureau and Order of the Eastern Star. Rachel also served as a 4-H Leader, was very active in the Republican party and was one of the original members of the Poweshiek County Zoning Commission. She was an excellent gardener, seamstress and cook. She will be remembered for her flawless work ethic and determination.

She is survived by three children, Gladys (Robert) Haworth, Barbara (Oran) Watson, both of Montezuma and Steve VeVerka of Deep River; one sister, Mary (Forrest) Gorsuch; twelve grandchildren: Ronald (Janice) Haworth, Rick (Shirley) Haworth, Randall (Sachiko) Haworth, Rachelle Haworth, Robyn (Prem) Samuel, Rhonda Bempah, Angela (Kyle) Watson Cook, Brenda (Eric) Watson Burrough, Cheri (Steve) Watson Semprini, Elliot (Jenny Hendrickson) VeVerka, Nathan VeVerka and Logan VeVerka; thirteen great grandchildren: Joshua and Jay DeWeese, Rachel and Sarah Haworth, Juliana Bempah, Derek and Isaac Samuel, Lauren and Olivia Burrough, Owen, Ellen and Vivian Cook and Sophia Semprini and a nephew Larry Gorsuch.

Rachel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sylvan; two granddaughters, Ramona and Rebecca Haworth.
