RITES FOR SARAH HICKS HELD SUNDAY

Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Hicks were Sunday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. in the Steffy Funeral Home with the Rev. Howard Hayes officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Vincent Johnson, soloist, accompanied by organist Miss Alice Underwood.

Casket bearers were Robert Hall, Dean Doonan, William Rempp, Claire Gregory, Donald McKee and Maynard Hutchinson. Interment was in Masonic-IOOF Cemetery.

Mrs. Hicks, 81, passed away Friday in a Grinnell hospital.

Sarah, daughter of Eliza and John Johnston, was born in County Fermanaugh, Ireland, on Sept. 27, 1886.

Her early life was spent in Ireland. In November, 1912, she was united in marriage with Robert Hicks. They came immediately to the United States where they established their home. To this union two daughters were born. They lived on a farm east of Montezuma until 1938 when they retired and moved into town. After the death of her husband in 1945, Mrs. Hicks maintained her present home.

Mrs. Hicks was an active member of the Methodist Church, the Women's Society of Christian Service and the Sunday School as long as her health permitted.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and was interested in all civic affairs.

She is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Rachel VeVerka and Mrs. Mary Gorsuch, both of Montezuma; four grandchildren, Mrs. Gladys Haworth of Deep River, Mrs. Barbara Watson of Des Moines, Steven VeVerka of Montezuma, and Larry Gorsuch, serving in the Armed Forces at Dow Air Force Base, Bangor, Maine; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Finnegan, and one brother, John Johnston, both in Ireland.
