FRANK SAUNDERS
SERVICES TUESDAYFrank E. Saunders, 75, of 228 Broad St., Grinnell, passed away Friday evening at Grinnell General Hospital East.
Mr. Saunders was the son of Will and Ida Mae Pascall Saunders and was born Feb. 5, 1893, at Havana, Ill. He served in France during World War I with Co. C of the 307th Engineers and was involved in the St. Mihiel and Mouse-Argonne battles.
Following his discharge from the Army he was married to Hazel Anthony on Jan. 1, 1920. To this union were born four children, three of whom survive: Mrs. Jack (Mildred) Owens of San Francisco, Calif.; Mrs. Guy (Jean) Evans of San Bernardino, Calif., and Robert E. Saunders of Grinnell.
Mr. Saunders farmed in the Sheridan community for a number of years. Following his wife's death in 1935, he came to Grinnell and worked for Scandrett's Feed Mill until ill health forced his retirement.
He was married to Carmen Playle on March 1, 1941, who survives him, along with his three children, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Also surviving are a brother and sister -- Sanford Saunders of Grundy Center and Mrs. Grace Timmerman of Monterey, Calif.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Edith Lucille; one grandson, two sisters and one brother.
Funeral services for Mr. Saunders will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. James Davidson, pastor of the Sheridan United Methodist church, officiating. The organist will be Mrs. Fred Weaver Jr., and pallbearers will include Howard Jones, Floyd Beason, Champ Delk, Harvey Marcum, Bob Lawthers, and Phillip Stewart. American Legion graveside services will be conducted by Jack Day, chaplain, and W.K. Richardson, commander of the Focht-Tennant Post No. 53 ceremonial unit.
Burial will be in Sheridan Cemetery northeast of Grinnell. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home.
