IONE P. RAYL

Ione P. Rayl, 83, of Searsboro died Sunday, Feb. 11, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lynnville Friends Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Santee officiating. Organist will be Darwin Van Wyk, and vocalist will be Kenneth Ratcliff. The body was cremated, and burial of the ashes will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Searsboro, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The daughter of Harrie and Bessie Kline Fleener, she was born Dec. 2, 1906, in Grinnell. She was a 1924 graduate of Grinnell High School and received her teaching certification from the former Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught school following her education.

She was married to Delbert Rayl, Aug. 28, 1927, in Gilman. The couple farmed in the Lynnville and Searsboro areas.

Mrs. Rayl was active in state and local Granges, 4-H, and the Hillcrest Garden Club of Searsboro. She served on the Searsboro City Council for many years and was also a former mayor of Searsboro. She was involved in the development of housing for the elderly, development and installation of water and sewer facilities in Searsboro and attended the Council on Aging for many years. In 1984 she was honored as Outstanding Older Iowan in Poweshiek County.

Surviving are two sons, Willis of Cornwall Bridge, Conn., and Kenneth of Knoxville; her daughter, Dorothy Hall of Brooklyn; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Maxine Tarman of Ames and Lucille Roten of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one granddaughter and one sister, Marian Mitchell.

Memorials may be made to the Osteoporosis Foundation.
