BURT H. SPETH SERVICES TODAY
Burt H. Speth, 81, of 717 Park St., died early Tuesday, Nov. 9, at Grinnell General Hospital.
The son of Henry Joseph and Caroline Margaret "Lena" Schneekloth Speth, he was born June 26, 1890, in Grinnell. He received his education in the rural schools and the Grinnell schools. In his early years he was associated with the Rock Island Railroad in Mason City and Grinnell.
Mr. Speth also was employed for many years at the Rex Cigar Store here and later was co-owner of Russ' Tavern until his retirement.
He was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, Hermon Masonic Lodge No. 273, and the Grinnell Elks Lodge where he received his 50-year membership pin several years ago.
He is survived by his sister, Irma Speth of Grinnell; a niece, Mrs. Cleone Snider of Muscatine; two grand-nieces, Mrs. Kathy Othmer and Nancy Snider; and a grand-nephew, Vince Snider. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward in 1970 and Carl in 1963, and one sister, Luella Speth in 1921.
Funeral services for Mr. Speth were held at 1:30 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Newell E. Davis, minister of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, and the Rev. Ralph Beebe of the Mayflower Home officiating.
Organist was Mrs. Willard Heffner, and pallbearers included Wesley Ahrens, Marlyn L. Olson, Kenneth Saunders, George Smith, Max Smith and Don Sparks.
Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.
