NELLIE HESS RITES TODAY

Nellie Elizabeth Hess, 89, died Friday morning, Dec. 7, at the Mayflower Home Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 today at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Philip J. Ramstad, pastor of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, officiating. Organist will be Kathleen Heffner. Vocalist will be Mrs. Wayne Dayton. Pallbearers will be Paul Stone, Virgil Stone, Warren Fogel, Walter Puls, P.D. Varnum and Elmer Urfer. Burial will be at the Ivy Hill Cemetery, Malcom.

The daughter of John and Elizabeth Shadel Stone, she was born Sept. 17, 1890, in Sheridan Township. She attended rural school near her home. On Aug. 23, 1916, she was married to Lester L. Hess. The couple had two sons.

The couple farmed in the Madison community until moving to a farm southeast of Malcom in 1934. In 1957, they retired and moved to 1317 Spencer St.

Mrs. Hess was a member of the Sunny Slope Grange near Malcom, a former charter member of the Iowa Farm Bureau, and a member of the Jolly Bunch and Neighborhood clubs.

Survivors included her sons, Chester Hess of Rte. 2, Malcom, and Dewey Hess of Grinnell; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Lester in 1971; her parents; four brothers, Fred, Henry, Lewis and George Stone; and a sister, Mrs. Vivian Fowler.
