MRS. ELLEN HESS DIES AT HOME IN BROOKLYN

Mrs. Ellen Hess died at her home on north Jackson street Thursday evening after a long illness. Mrs. Hess has been out of health for a number of years and critically ill for several weeks.

Ellen Lewis Hess was born at Mapletown, N.Y., Sept. 8, 1852 and passed away at her late home in Brooklyn, Ia., Jan. 24, 1935, aged 82 years, four months and 16 days. When she was about eight years old she came to Davenport, Ia. Nov. 8, 1873, she was united in marriage with Peter J. Hess and in 1883 the family moved to Madison township in this county, where they lived for 38 years. In 1921 they moved to Brooklyn.

This union was blest with three children, Mrs. Florence Triplett and Mrs. Lulu Miller, both deceased, and Lester Hess, who lives southwest of Brooklyn. There are nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Mrs. Hess was the last of her family to be called to her eternal home.

She was a charter member of the Madison Christian church and remained in that faith as long as she lived. In 1923 Mr. and Mrs. Hess celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

November 3, 1923, she was bereft of her husband. She bore her sorrow with great fortitude. She loved her home and was especially kind to those who were in affliction and sorrow. Mrs. Hess lived a useful life, she has gone to her crowning and she rests, for there is a rest to the people of God.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J.H. Freedline from the Methodist church Saturday afternoon.

Out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Lee Holland, Eva Triplett and Monsieur Triplett of Des Moines, Mrs. Lizzie Stone and Earl Fowler of Grinnell, Mrs. Harry Boyd of Malcom and Mr. and Mrs. Allen Miller and family of Oskaloosa.
