RITES TODAY FOR CARL SPETH, 67, FORMER COUNCILMAN

Carl Speth, 67, for many years a Grinnell City Councilman, succumbed early Friday morning at a local hospital. He had been in ill health for about one year.

Funeral services were held this afternoon (Monday) from the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Shireman, minister of the First Baptist church, officiating. Music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bohstedt.

Serving as flower bearers were Mrs. Clair Strand and Mrs. Howard Hyde.

Pallbearers were Joe Brown, John Hotchkin, Bob Lear, Kenneth Paul, Ed Pedersen, and Ralph Snider. Interment was in Hazelwood cemetery.

Born in Grinnell on Nov. 24th, 1895, he was the son of Henry Joe and Lena Schneekloth Speth. He attended the local schools and had been a resident of Grinnell his entire life.

He was united in marriage with Jennie Lewis on June 17th, 1920, in Des Moines. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Norman (Cleone) Snider of Muscatine.

Mr. Speth worked for a time with the Rock Island Railroad. He joined the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad as a clerk and cashier and remained with the company until his retirement in 1958.

He had represented the Grinnell fourth ward on the City Council for nine years before declining to seek reelection several years ago.

He was a member of Grinnell Lodge No. 1266, B.P.O. Elks.

Survivors include his wife, Jennie, at the family home; his daughter, Cleone; two brothers, Burt and Ed Speth of Grinnell; and one sister, Miss Irma Speth, also of Grinnell.

Also surviving are his three grandchildren, Katherine, Nancy and Vince Snider, all of Muscatine.

Mr. Speth was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Luella.
