JEANETTE SPETH

Jeanette (Jennie) Speth, 107, of Muscatine, formerly of Grinnell, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at Muscatine Care Center.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Stewart, pastor of the church, officiating. Inurnment will be held at Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church c/o Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell IA 50112.

She was born June 3, 1897, in Grinnell, the daughter of Hudson and Jeanette Bowie Lewis, and lived in three different centuries. She was raised and educated in Grinnell, then attended Capitol City Commercial College in Des Moines. She was married on June 17, 1920, to Carl Joe Speth in Des Moines. The couple lived in Grinnell and she worked at Morrison-Shults Glove Company. Following the death of her husband in 1963, she worked in the food service of the Grinnell Schools and later at the Grinnell College Book Store. In 1976 she moved to Muscatine to be near her daughter.

She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Cleone Speth of Muscatine; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren and one niece. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four sisters, Margaret Belnap, Gertrude Whitaker, Mabel Breiting and Lillian Eilers, and one brother George Lewis.
