HUDSON LEWIS FUNERAL HELD

Funeral services for Hudson Lewis, aged 75, who passed away Tuesday afternoon, were held Thursday afternoon from the home at 1130 Spring street, conducted by Rev. Wm. Welsh. Mrs. John Carter sang "The Old Rugged Cross," accompanied on the piano by Mrs. George Brown. Pallbearers were five sons-in-law Guy Belknap, Jerry Eiler, Will James, Carl Speth and Alfred Breiting and Bob Breiting. Burial was at Hazelwood.

Hudson Thomas Lewis, son of Sara Lorton and Burve Lewis was born in Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky, May 28, 1856 and passed from this life, after an illness of more than two months, June 9, 1931.

He spent his childhood in Kentucky in the brakes of the Cumberland mountains and lived there through the Civil War, his brother Jake being a Confederate soldier.

When he was about 12 years old he went to Lewis, Alabama--a town named after his grandfather Lewis, to work on his uncle's plantation.

When a young man he came to Iowa with his mother, brothers and sister in a prairie schooner, his father having died when he was 5 years old.

Later he moved to Kansas. He was married to Janet Bowie of kindred nature. He loved books and was a great reader. He also loved music and his one treasured possession was an old violin that was once owned by John Brown the abolitionist.

The passing of Mr. Lewis will not only be felt by his friends, but it severs the last tie of a devoted family, Mrs. Lewis having passed away two years ago.

His one request was fulfilled in the singing of the Hymn he loved, "The Old Rugged Cross."
