MRS. HUTS LEWIS SINCERELY MOURNED

After an illness of two years' duration, Mrs. Huts T. Lewis passed into the better life at her home on Pearl street Sunday afternoon, February 24, 1929.

Janet Bowie was born in Astabula, Morgan County, Ohio, on August 15, 1866. She was the daughter of Robert and Jessie Bowie, who were natives of Scotland, and of this Scotch ancestry she was very proud.

When a child of ten years of age she came with her parents to Grinnell, Iowa, and two years later accompanied her mother to California to join her father who had proceeded them there. Later she returned to Grinnell where she lived until united in marriage to Hudson T. Lewis, of Monticello, Ky., September 7, 1882. The ceremony was performed by Dr. Sturtevant, pastor of the Congregational Church.

They made their home in Grinnell during the greater part of their married life, but lived in Ottumwa, Ia., and also in Topeka, Kan., at two different intervals, coming to Grinnell in 1894, where they have resided ever since.

This union was blessed with eight children, six of whom are living, and now, with their father, mourn the loss of a dear, beloved mother. They are: Mrs. Margaret Belknap of Des Moines, Ia., Mrs. Gertrude James, Mrs. Mabel Breiting, Mrs. Jennie Speth, all of Grinnell, and Mrs. Lillian Eilers of New Sharon, and George Lewis of Wilmar, Minn. A daughter, Maude, died at Grinnell in 1906, at the age of seventeen years, and this was one of the great sorrows in Mrs. Lewis' life. Another daughter, Jessie, died in infancy at Topeka, Kan. Besides her children she is survived by eight grand-children and two great-grand-children, a nephew, H.W. Decatur of Montezuma, and two cousins, Rev. Archibald McCallum and his sister, Margaret, of Glasgow, Scotland.

In the spring of 1906 she was united with the First Baptist Church of Grinnell under the pastorate of Rev. Arthur J. Hurley. She greatly enjoyed this affliation, believing and relying on the promises of her Master and was faithful unto death.
