Clarence, the son of John and Clara Figland Cogley, was born June 25, 1931, in Grinnell. He was raised on the family farm northeast of Grinnell, and he was educated in the Sheridan Township rural school. He graduated from Grinnell High School in 1949, and he then served four years with the U.S. Navy. Three of those years he spent in the Philippines during the Korean War.

Clarence married JoAnn Lidtka on March 24, 1956. The couple had three children--a son, Mike, and two daughters, Cathy and Melissa.

Clarence was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Grinnell Eagles Club, and the Elks Lodge, and he served on the former Malcom Elevator board and the Trinity Lutheran Church council.

Clarence enjoyed traveling. Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Alaska were just a few of his favorite destinations. He also enjoyed spending his last few winters in Arizona. His other hobbies included sharing hunting and fishing with his grandson, Cale.

Clarence took pride in his team of Belgians. He played host to many hayrides in the summer and bobsled rides in the winter.

Most of all, he enjoyed his grandchildren, Cale and Skye Puls, and Jonathan Goedken.

His family remembers him as someone who taught the values and rewards of hard work. He was considered strong, yet sensitive. He took pride in being a generous man and a good friend to many. Clarence was known for his quick wit.

Clarence is survived by his wife, JoAnn; his children, Mike, of Portland, Oregon, Cathy and her husband, Dale Puls, of Grinnell; and Melissa and her husband, Scott Goedken of Swisher; his grandchildren, Cale and Skye Puls of Grinnell, and Jonathan Goedken of Swisher; his three brothers, Dr. Keith Cogley of Colfax, Dr. Allen Cogley of Jefferson City, Tennessee, and Dr. Roy Cogley of Green Valley, Arizona; his eight sisters, Betty Bryan of Davenport, Eleanor Mason of Cedar Rapids, Bernice Mithelman of Grinnell, Avis Kelm of Grinnell, Joan Hopkinson of Savannah, Georgia, Barbara Danskin of Scottsdale, Arizona, Marilyn Copeland of Jefferson, and Pat Lang of Grinnell.
