OLD SETTLER PASSES

Mrs. Meredith Dies Friday of Injuries Received in Detroit.

CAME TO POWESHIEK COUNTY IN YEAR 1864

Leaves Large Circle of Near Relatives And Friends to Mourn Her Death.

Friday morning, March 28, Mrs. Mary Katherine Meredith died at the hospital in Marshalltown, as the result of injuries received from being thrown from a street car in Detroit, Mich. December 20.

Mary Katherine Blaine was born in Jamestown, Greene county, Ohio, April 21, 1859, the daughter of Joseph and Martha Blaine. In 1864, the family moved to Montezuma. Here she spent her girlhood days on a farm west of town, and July 15, 1875, she was united in marriage to Solomon J. Meredith.

Six children were born to this union, two of whom, Myrtle and Edith, died in infancy. Four survive the deceased woman, and all were present at the funeral. They are: Mrs. M.G. Howard, of Grinnell, Mrs. Harry Pilgrim of Omaha, Mrs. Fred Taplin of Zearing, and Orville Meredith of Detroit.

The married life of Mr. and Mrs. Meredith was passed at Searsboro and Montezuma. Mr. Meredith's death occurred in 1894, and since that time Mrs. Meredith and the children lived together until each of the girls married and recently she has been at home with her son, Orville, at Detroit. She was a bright, cheerful home-loving woman and retained in a strong measure the affection of her children who have all successfully helped make her a home where love and comfort abounded.

December 20th Mrs. Meredith was thrown from a street car in Detroit. She was standing with others at the gate when the gate was thrown open before the car stopped, throwing her to the pavement and another lady falling heavily on her. Her injuries were cared for and Mrs. Howard of this city spent several weeks with her. As she did not improve Mrs. Howard had her transferred to a hospital in Marshalltown where she could be nearer her, and since Feb. 3, she has been at that place.

Mrs. Meredith, however, grew worse and Thursday morning the sisters were summoned to her bedside where she died Friday morning. The body was brought to Grinnell and the funeral was held Sunday at 1:30 o'clock--old time--at the home of M.G. Howard, conducted by Rev. J.M. Brown. Two songs were sung by Mrs. Black and Mrs. Ennis.

Present at the funeral besides the daughters and son were her half-brother, A.A. Hamilton and family of Montezuma, her brother, Wm. Blaine and family of Montezuma, her sister, Mrs. H.P. Johnson and family of Montezuma, and her sister, Mrs. Fred Wells and family near Ewart. Also Mr. Fred Taplin and two sons, of Zearing.

Aside from her four children, Mrs. Meredith leaves eight grandchildren, all to mourn the loss of a loved and kind woman.
