LAWRENCE WALLIS

Lawrence W. Wallis, 83, of 2005 Spring St., Grinnell, died of congestive heart failure Friday, Feb. 27, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kenneth Wallace, pastor of the Newburg-Chester United Church of Christ, officiating. Organist will be Alice Renaud, and vocalists will be Delmar and Jean Sharp. Pallbearers will be Richard Bailey, John Breeden, Denny Charnahan, Roger Kendall, Donald Renaud, Wilbur Osland, Earl Sleeuwenhoek and Clark Weaver. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery.

He was born June 21, 1914, at Emden, Mo., to Archie and Eulelah Critchlow Wallis. The family moved to the Grinnell area, and he attended Sheridan No. 9 School.

On Dec. 25, 1939, he was married to Clara Foster in Newburg. The couple farmed in the Newburg area from 1940 to 1981. They moved to Grinnell in 1994.

Mr. Wallis was a member of the Newburg-Chester United Church of Christ and the Farm Bureau. He had served on the Poweshiek County Zoning Board, the ASCS in Chester Township and was a former Chester Township trustee.

Surviving are his wife; one son, Gary of Sherman, Texas; two daughters, Sheryl Anderson of Grinnell and Marilyn Cram of Williamsburg, Va.; five grandchildren; one sister, Mabel Wallen of Marshalltown; and one brother, Harold of Mesa, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Raymond.

Memorials may be made to his church or to Grinnell Regional Hospice.
