MILDRED BAILEY

Mildred Jane "Midge" Bailey, 79, of Grinnell died Wednesday, May 20, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

A memorial service was conducted Saturday morning at Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Judy Wadding of the Grinnell United Methodist Church officiating. Music was provided by trumpeter Bret Crowl.

The daughter of William and Alta McNeal Wilson, she was born Nov. 9, 1918, in Ewart. She was raised in Grinnell by her aunt and uncle, Nell and Peck Martin, and was a 1936 graduate of Grinnell High School.

She was married to R. Victor Bailey March 13, 1941, in Des Moines. The couple lived in Grinnell.

During World War II when her husband served in the military, Mrs. Bailey lived in Hobbs, N.M.; and Lincoln, Neb. Returning to Grinnell in 1946, she was employed as a medical assistant for 17 years in the office of Drs. Korfmacher and Brobyn. She later worked for several years as a departmental secretary at Grinnell College.

She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Chruch and past president of the United Methodist Women. She also was a member and past president of the Grinnell American Legion Auxiliary and T.T.T. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters and Columbus Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star of Lincoln, Neb., for over 50 years.

Mrs. Bailey was active with the Goodfellows organization for 33 years. She was also one of the first Welcome Wagon hostsesses here and was a former Blue Bird and Camp Fire leader, as well as a hospital volunteer.

Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Vickie Leigh Duede of Altoona and Janet Kay Haller of Kearney, Neb.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; the aunt and uncle who raised her; three brothers, Lawrence, Robert and Donald Wilson; and one sister, Wilma Wilson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary or the Grinnell United Methodist Church.
