CAROL SAMMON

Carol Sammon, 95, of Granite City, Ill., formerly of Grinnell, died Saturday, Sept. 25, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Sept. 29, at Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Del Dawes, retired, officiating. A service by members of the Rebekah Lodge was included. Organist was Kathleen Heffner. Pallbearers were Edna Chedester, Sidney Hunter, William Moore, Walter Richardson, Ronnie Williams and Jimmy Wilkins. Howard Criswell was an honorary bearer. Burial was in Jackson Township Cemetery, Montezuma. Memorial contributions may be made to the Carol Sammon Memorial Fund.

She was born Feb. 7, 1909, in Bethel Township, Jasper County, the daughter of Harvey Manzel and Harriet Myrtle Black Bailey. She was a graduate of Grinnell High School, who later received her teaching certificate from the former Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She was married on May 12, 1933, in Oskaloosa to Evore W. Sammon and the couple made their home in Grinnell. In 1938, the couple managed the Ewart Store and Post Office for a year. She taught school at Richland #1 and Oak Grove rural schools and later in Searsboro. She also taught third grade at Parker and Davis Elementary Schools in Grinnell, retiring in 1964. Following retirement she enjoyed working at the Grinnell Senior Center. She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Grinnell Rebekah Lodge of which she served as noble grand and past noble grand and a member of the MAC Choir. In 1999 she moved to Granite City to live with her son.

Dedicated to her family, she helped raise her grandchildren. She also was a devoted teacher who enjoyed keeping touch with former students. She enjoyed doing volunteer work, music, baking and traveling.

She is survived by her son Larry Sammon of Granite City; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one brother, Bernard Bailey of Dana Point, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters Inez Bailey and Mildred Vivian Bailey.
