MYRTLE BAILEY RITES TODAY

H. Myrtle Bailey, 94, of 1233 Spring St., Grinnell, died Thursday afternoon at Grinnell General Hospital.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bailey were held at 10:30 a.m. today at the James-Schalinske Funeral Home, with the Rev. Carl Klein, pastor of the Bethel United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Myron Harris, pastor of the Northside Friends Church, officiating. Music was provided by Irene Bryan, organist, and Gordon Van Donselaar, vocalist. Pallbearers were Robert W. Ashby, Stanley Ashby, Harold Churchill, Gus Kaisand, Wendell Sleeuwenhoek, and Myron White. Flowerbearers were Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Sleeuwenhoek.

Burial was at the Woodland Cemetery, Lynnville.

The daughter of William and Ida Jane Whiting Black, she was born Aug. 19, 1883, at Cottage Grove, Wis. Following the death of her father, her mother was remarried to Frank Smith, and the family moved to Eldora. She attended school in that community and later moved to the Bethel community near Grinnell.

In May 1906, she was married to Manzel Bailey at her parents' home. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Bailey farmed in the Bethel area.

Mrs. Bailey was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and was active in the church's women's society. She was also a member of the Grinnell Women's Christian Temperance Union, the Poweshiek-Jasper Farm Bureau, and the Bethel Grange.

Survivors include her children, Mrs. Carol Sammon of Grinnell and Bernard A. Bailey of Long Beach, Calif.; three grandchildren; three-great-grandchildlen; and one brother, Floyd Smith of San Marino, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two daughters, Mildred and Inez; and two half-sisters, Flossie Ann Brown and Averine Magness.
