BERNICE WINCHELL

Bernice Winchell, 89, of Grinnell died Tuesday, June 12, 2007, at St. Francis Manor.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 26, at 1 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home with John Epperson, pastor of Grinnell Christian Church, officiaiting. Pianist will be Kathleen McCune. Casket bearers will be Bruce Potter and Carmon, Chris, Curt, Dennis and Kevin Wilson. Honorary bearers will be Randy and Ron Deppe, Rick Springer and Brian and Michael Wilson. Burial will follow at Hazelwood Cemetery. Friends may call at Smith Funeral Home beginning at 12 noon on Friday. Family members will be present at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice c/o Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

She was born Dec. 2, 1917, on the family farm near Rock Creek Lake, west of Grinnell, to Herman and Gladys Shill Deppe. She was raised on the family farm, attended rural school and graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1935. Following her education she worked for Grinnell Shoe Company.

She was married on May 6, 1949, to John Winchell in Tipton. They lived in Grinnell and she worked in the office of Rudy Patrick Seed Company. In the 1970s, the couple moved to St. Joseph, Mo., where she worked for a research seed company. Following her retirement in 1980, they returned to Grinnell.

She was a member of the Grinnell Eagles Club who enjoyed photography, fishing, bowling, painting, gardening, cooking, playing cards and watching professional and college sporting events.

She is survived by two brothers, Gerald Deppe and Ernest "Bud" Deppe, both of Grinnell, and one sister Maxine Wilson of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one brother Albert Deppe and one sister Della Springer.
