ALBERT DEPPE

Albert Deppe, 88, of rural Grinnell died Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Arends, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Tama, officiating. Organist will be Ann Buchmeier. Pallbearers will be Brent, Eric, Grant, Justin and Nathen Deppe and Scott Johnson. Honorary bearers will be Gary and Shannon Deppe, Keri Henderson, Carolyn Honn, Ted Johnson, Jenny Lester, Laura Pinkerton, Crystal Skelton and Joe Sawyer. Burial will be in Rock Creek Cemetery, rural Jasper County. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

He was born Dec. 30, 1915, in Pine River, Minn., the son of Herman and Gladys Shill Deppe. He was raised on a farm in Jasper County and was a 1932 graduate of Grinnell High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II. He was married on Jan. 26, 1947, in Grinnell to Virginia Kann and they farmed in Jasper County. He was employed for 43 years as a road grader for Jasper County, retiring in 1977. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Kellogg, the American Farm Bureau, Victor Grange in Jasper County and the Kellogg American Legion.

He is survived by his wife Virginia of Grinnell; four sons, Laird and Ron, both of Grinnell, Charles of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Gerald of Banderas, Texas; two daughters, Linda Lester of Grinnell and Pat Skelton of San Antonio, Texas; 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; two brothers, Gerald and Ernest, both of Grinnell, and two sisters, Bernice Winchell and Maxine Wilson, both of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Della Springer.
