CATHRYN L. SOUTER

Cathryn L. Souter, 86, of Iowa City and formerly of Grinnell died on Friday, Sept. 08, 2006, at Greenwood Manor in Iowa City.

A funeral service for Cathryn Souter will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the United Church of Christ-Congregational in Grinnell, with the Rev. Kathy Reid officiating. Casket bearers will include Steve Ross, Eric Shope, Nick Souter, Brian Ross, Denny Monsma and Greg Rasmussen. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home from noon to 8 p.m. on Tuesday; the family will be present at the church for an hour prior to the service.

Born on Oct. 22, 1919, near Carnforth, Iowa, she was the daughter of H.M. and Alma Benton Gwin. She was raised in Grinnell and attended Cooper and Davis Schools before graduating from Grinnell High School with the class of 1937.

On July 26, 1937, she married Donald R. Souter at Ewart. The couple lived in Grinnell, where she was a mother and homemaker.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational and served as a Sunday school teacher, assisted wedding receptions and was a past president of the women's federation of the church. She was also a Cub Scout den mother and enjoyed family functions, cooking, canning, needle-work, gardening and fishing.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Roger Souter of Iowa City; two daughters, Sandra Ross of Marion, Va., and Linda Shope of Iowa City; and two sisters, Lillian Rasmussen of Bellevue, Neb., and Shirley Monsma of Altoona; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Pauline Graham, Lucille Lockhart and Harriet Braley; and a brother, Harry Gwin Jr.
