AGNES N. SOUTER

Agnes N. McMeekin, daughter of Jas. and Eliza McMeekin, was born in the County of Down, Ireland, October 19, 1841, and came with her parents to this country in the year 1868. She was one of eight children, four of whom have gone before. The three who are still living are Robert, of Ewart, James of Gatesville, Texas, and Mary, near the old home in Ireland. They located in Rock Island county, Ill., later moving to Poweshiek county, Iowa, where she was united in marriage to John Souter, of Montezuma, Iowa, on November 18, 1875. They began housekeeping on the farm where she died. Many years of toil were devoted to the building up of their home and raising their family, which consisted of three children, two sons and one daughter. The children are Dr. John W. Souter, of New Sharon, R.H. Souter, of Grinnell, and Mrs. A.A. Gregson, of Ewart. She was converted and united with the Presbyterian church when a young woman, and later united with the Christian church at Montezuma and by transferring her membership she became a charter member of the Christian church at Ewart.

Being a patient sufferer for years, she was deprived of the privilege of attending church services but never lost faith in her Saviour. She died at her home September 1, 1911, being 69 years, 10 months and 12 days of age. She will be missed by her husband, children and six grandchildren, but their loss is her gain. She was a most devoted wife and mother, an exemplary Christian and the minister's friend and devoted her life to the service of her family.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W.B. Wilson, of Grinnell, assisted by Rev. Mr. Rankin, of Ewart, and the body was laid to rest in the beautiful Montezuma cemetery, there to await the resurrection morn.
