JOHN SOUTER, A PIONEER, PASSED SUNDAY

Funeral Services Were Held This Afternoon from Christian Church--Burial at Montezuma.

After witnessing the growth and development of Poweshiek county and being at the venerable and ripe old age of 87 years, John Souter, one of the oldest pioneer residents of this county, passed away Sunday afternoon at the home of his son, Dr. J.W. Souter at 1031 Chatterton street.

Mr. Souter came from Ohio to Deep River in the '50's and lived there for years, finally moving to Ewart and then to the Montezuma vicinity. He was considered one of the county's oldest citizens, in years and in residence and it is a genuine regret and sorrow to many that he has gone.

He leaves as immediate relatives two sons, J.W. Souter of Grinnell and R.H. Souter of Ewart.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Christian church. Tomorrow morning the body will be taken to Montezuma, where a further service will be held at one o'clock that afternoon, followed by interment in the Montezuma cemetery. The following from out of town were here this afternoon to attend the funeral: Robert McMeekin of Coal Valley, Ill.; Hugh McMeekin of Moline; and Leo Gregson of Corwith.
