OLD TIME RESIDENT OF COUNTY IS DEAD

Ira Applegate Passes at Soldiers Home At Leavenworth, Kas.

Ira Applegate, one of the old time residents of Poweshiek county, died at the soldiers home at Leavenworth, Kas., March 1, aged 85 years. Mr. Applegate was born near Eminence, Morgan county, Ind., March 12, 1839 and came to Poweshiek county with his parents in 1853. The family settled in Sugar Creek township. On September 23, 1860, he was married to Matilda White by Rev. Martin Gregson.

In September of 1862 Mr. Applegate enlisted in Co. C 28th Iowa Volunteer Infantry under Captain Carr and saw active service. In 1873 he moved to Kansas and with the exception of a few years in Iowa the rest of his life was spent in that state.

Mr. Applegate is survived by four sons, 32 grand children and 12 great grandchildren. He is buried at Devizer, Kansas.

NOTE: Ira Applegate is buried at Devizes Cem. in Norton Co. Kansas (not Devizer)
