MCCONKEY RITES TODAY

Lucy May McConkey, 83, of Madera, Calif., formerly of Grinnell, died Tuesday in Madera.

The Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Leo V. Kuebrich officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner. Pall-bearers were Maurice Creamer, Gene Gilbert, Donald Henderson, Robert Henderson, Richard Parker and Kenneth Saunders. The Vigil Service was conducted at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home.

Burial was in the Calvary section of Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of Joseph and Rose Smith Essex, she was born Oct. 20, 1895, at New Sharon. She attended rural schools in the New Sharon area.

On Oct. 5, 1922, she was married to Ralph Samuel McConkey in Grinnell. The couple had one son, Thomas. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. McConkey farmed near New Sharon for 15 years before moving to Grinnell.

While living in Grinnell, Mrs. McConkey was employed as a bookkeeper at the Bartling-Nuckles Jewelry Store. She was also employed at the Morrison-Shults glove factory and DeLong's jacket factory. She was an active member of St. Mary's and served on the Glar and Rosary Society of the church.

She is survived by her son, Thomas McConkey of Madera; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; and two sisters, Mrs. Frances Gilbert of New Sharon and Mrs. Agnes Creamer of Moline, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one sister, Mrs. Mamie Henderson.
