Henry Delmar Hockenbury, son of Elizabeth and Isaac Hockenbury, was born at Highbridge, N.J., on April 2, 1871, and passed away Nov. 22, 1944 in Grinnell, at the age of 73 years, seven months and 20 days.
It was at Highbridge, New Jersey that he grew to young manhood and recieved his early academic training.
In 1890 he came to Malcom, and thereafter he took a course at Highland Park college in Des Moines that prepared him for his work as a teacher in the rural schools of Malcom township.
Forty-six years ago on August 24, 1898, he was united in marriage to Gertrude Ruff at Grinnell. To this union 3 sons were born. These are Donald, an inspector in the Buick Plant in Chicago, Julian who passed away 12 years ago and Kenneth, now serving with the American Red Cross at the Army Air Base in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Mr. and Mrs. Hockenbury have lived for the past 22 years at their present home in Grinnell, after previously residing 24 years in Des Moines, where Mr. Hockenbury engaged in the mercantile business.
Mr. Hockenbury leaves to sorrow in his passing besides his wife, his sons, his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Kenneth Hockenbury of Harrisburg, Pa., besides a large circle of friends he has gained through his life time.
While still a young man, Mr. Hockenbury became associated with the Mason lodge as a charter member in Des Moines of Auburn Lodge No. 592. He bore the distinctive honor among his brother Masons of being the only living charter member of the Lodge No. 592 at the time he passed away.
Throughout his entire life his interests centered chiefly about his home life and every member of his family. He was a devoted husband, and a consecrated father who will be kindly remembered by all who came in contact with him.
