Obituary
Mrs. Mary Emma Breeden

Mrs. Mary Emma Breeden was the daughter of Richard Jewel & Emiline Cox, and was born on a farm in Jasper County, December 31, 1866, and died in Des Moines on Friday, February 4, 1944, having attained the age of 77yrs 1mo 3days.

When she was yet a small girl the family moved to a farm in Hickory Grove township, south of Newburg, near the Mount Pleasant M. E. Church of which she later became a member. Here she grew up under conditions little removed from those of the early pioneers, when necessity required plain, wholesome living, courage and industry.

On January 17, 1884, she was married to Alfred J. Breeden, and the young couple immediately established a home on a farm near the old home place where they lived continuously until 1900, when they moved to Grinnell. Here, at the Main street home, they spent the remaining years of their lives.

Mrs. Breeden was the mother of 1 son, Floyd L. with whom she has lived since the death of Mr. Breeden, November 8, 1941. Also surviving her are a grandson, Lyle A. Breeden, 3 great grandchildren, all of Sacramento, California and a brother, William M. Cox of Grinnell.

Mrs. Breeden lived a quiet, retiring life. Her main interest lay in her home and friends, and there her influence was always strong and helpful. Thus passes another of Iowa's good women, whose gentle, kindly ways have been a constant benediction.

Funeral services conducted by Rev. W. B. Wilson were held at the James Funeral Home, Monday afternoon with burial in Hazelwood. The pall bearers were J. G. Shifflet, Carl Child, Charles Harson, Dr. W. R. Kinzer, Ross Coutts and George Maron.
