Harry "Spike" Gwin Jr., 65, died Friday, of emphysema March 30, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Bonham, Texas.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Raymond C. Lott, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist will be Margaret Wheeler.

Pallbearers will be Maynard Durr, Art Grosenbach, Joe Kelly, Robert Puls, Dennis Rook, Marvin Steenhoek and Melvin Stoker. Military rites will be conducted by members of the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit, with burial in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The son of Harry Morton and Alma Fae Benton Gwin, he was born Jan. 12, 1925, in Grinnell. He attended local schools and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1943. During World War II he served with the U.S. Navy, and following his discharge he attended carpenter training school in Minneapolis, Minn. He then returned to Grinnell and worked for several construction firms, including Tew Construction. He was a past commander of the American Legion post here and also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He left Grinnell in 1978 for Plano, Texas, where he was employed by Capital Wire and Cable Co. until his health failed.

He is survived by three daughters, Kathleen
Miller of McKinney, Texas, Debra Stevens of Ankeny and Cynthia Whannel of New Haven, Ind.; six grandchildren; and four sisters, Pauline Graham of Sumner, Wash., Cathryn Souter of Grinnell, Lillian Rasmussen of Bellevue, Neb., and Shirley Monsma of Altoona. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Lucille Lockhart and Harriet Braley.
