HELEN I. HILLIGAS
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, June 29, at the Nevenhoven Funeral Home in Brooklyn for Mrs. Helen I. Hilligas, 95, of Marengo, a former resident of Brooklyn, who died Thursday, June 24, 1999, at Marengo Memorial Hospital in Marengo.
The Rev. William Daylong, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, officiated. Casket bearers were Marvin Hilligas, Mark Hilligas, Leroy Hilligas, David Stratton, Jeff Kriegel and Marvin Waline. Interment was in the Newton Union Cemetery at Newton.
Helen Irene Myers Hilligas, daughter of Lewis John Carl Myers and Gertrude Williams Myers, was born March 29, 1904, at Newton, She was a graduate of the Newton High School.
On June 20, 1925, she was married to Charles C. Hilligas in Knoxville. They lived in Newton before moving to Guernsey. From there, they moved to Brooklyn and Mr. Hilligas died in 1965. In 1982, Mrs. Hilligas moved to Marshalltown and in February 1999 moved to Marengo.
She was raised in the Lutheran faith, and for a number of years attended the Methodist churches. Mrs. Hilligas was a member of Francis Gallagher American Legion Unit #294 Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Louis Franklin and Charles Jr.; one daughter, Gloria Faye; one brother, Floyd Myers; and one grandson, Franklin Hilligas.
Surviving are one daughter and her husband, Sandra and Leo Stratton of Ladora; two sons and their wives, Richard and Patricia Hilligas, and Don and Peggy Hilligas, all of Brooklyn; one sister, Mabel Stoneburner of Waterloo; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial fund has been established.
