JAMES ANDREW CASS

It is with deep regret that The Herald chronicles the death of James A. Cass, a young, bright and successful farmer living about eight miles west of town. He was born in Malcom township January 10, 1890, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cass. In 1903 the family moved to a farm about eight miles west of the Merrill corner where he since lived.

Nov. 1, 1916, he was united in marriage with Miss Elsie M. Morgart. To this union a little daughter, Norma Ruth, was born on September 12, 1917. Caring for his wife and little baby during her sickness, the fatal illness, typhoid fever, fastened itself upon him and though fighting an indisposition to the last, he was finally forced to go to bed only about a week before his death. He was taken to the Grinnell hospital where the best care was given him, but it was too late. His nervous system was run down and too much exhausted to stand the severe ravages of the fever. And yet so deceptive was the disease that only a short time before his death no fear was entertained for his recovery.

Mr. Cass was a bright, strong, energetic young man, coming from one of our earlier trusted and thrifty families, and had proven his worth on the farm and in the home. Besides his wife and little daughter, he leaves to mourn his death his father and mother, and three sisters, and a long list of other relatives and friends.

The funeral was held Friday at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. Mr. Hearst, of Newburg, assisted by Rev. A.C. Stowe. Music was by a quartet consisting of Misses Helen Thomson and Marjorie Warner and Mr. Walker and Mr. Morrison. Interment was in Hazelwood.
