LAST RITES SAID FOR SADIE CASS

Miss Sadie A. Cass, of 1403 West St., passed away early Wednesday morning, Oct. (?) 1968, at Grinnell General Hospital-East folowing an illness suffered the previous seven weeks.

She was one of four children born to Frank Luther Cass and Elizabeth Jane Mitchell Cass on a farm near Malcom, Iowa. She attended the rural schools near her family farm and later graduated from Grinnell High School. For a number of years she taught in the rural schools of Grant Township in Poweshiek County and Hickory Grove Township in Jasper County.

In 1919, when her parents retired from farming and moved to Grinnell, she lived in their home caring for them. Her father, Frank, passed away on April 29, 1934 and her mother, Elizabeth Jane, on Oct. 26, 1948.

In 1937, following her mother's failing health, her sister, Myrtle, left her work with Columbia University in New York City to be with her and their mother.

Though not in the best of health in recent years, she took an active interest in managing the family farms. She enjoyed the out-of-doors and she had a special interest in her flowers and gardening. She was interested in and followed the development of the Grinnell General Hospital. She was a member of the Grinnell United Church of Christ.

She is survived by her sister, Myrtle Cass, at the family home in Grinnell, her niece, Mrs. Floyd Rice of Des Moines, Iowa and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother, James A. Cass and sister, Mary Cass Johnson.

Funeral services for Sadie Cass were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 1968, at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Newell E. Davis, Minister of the United Church of Christ (Congregational), officiating.

Organ selections were played by Mrs. R.J. Nash, and pallbearers were Frank Chrisbens, Robert Weiser, Rodney Burnett, John F. Bierman, Howard Tinnes and Virgil Taylor.

Burial was made in the family plot at Hazelwood Cemetery.
