MYRTLE CASS

Myrtle Marguerite Cass, 100, of Grinnell died Thursday, Dec. 5, at her home.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Green, pastor of the Grinnell First Assembly of God Church, and the Rev. Bob Molesberry, pastor of the Grinnell United Church of Christ--Congegational, officiating. Organist will be Alice Renaud.

Pallbearers will be Stewart Buchenau, Bob Rice, Dennis Rice, Jim Rice, Jim Rice II and Terry Rice. Honorary bearers will be John F. Bierman, John F. Bierman III, Todd Linden, Richard Pringnitz and Kenneth Thompson. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of Frank Luther and Elizabeth Jane Mitchell Cass, she was born Sept. 8, 1896, on a farm near Malcom. She attended rural school and later graduated from Grinnell High School.

She received her B.A. from Grinnell College in 1929 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She was a member of the Latin, Science and Mathematics clubs.

She received her M.A. in Latin at Columbia University in New York City and her Ph.D. in languages in 1933, also from Columbia.

Dr. Cass received a grant for research in the humanities at Columbia and remained there until 1937. She returned to Grinnell to care for her mother and sister at the family home.

She was a member of the Grinnell United Church of Christ--Congregational and the Worldwide Church of God in Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mary Cass Johnson and Sadie A. Cass; and one brother, James.

Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
