GENE FLEENER

Gene Fleener, 83, formerly of Grinnell, died Sunday, June 18, 2006, in Spokane, Wash.

He served in the United States Marine Corps for seven years and was a defender of Wake Island during the surrender of the island, after which he spent four years in a Japanese prison of war camp. Following his military service he graduated from the University of Oregon. He worked in property manaagement in southern California and was the owner of the Honni Bear Dress Shop in Big Bear Lake, Calif. In recent years he had resided in Des Moines, Iowa, and Spokane, Wash.

He is survived by one son Scott of Huntington Beach, Calif.; one daughter Sheri Layne; six grandchildren, four great grandchildren and two brothers, Delmar and Bill Fleener. He was preceded in death by his wife Hellayne.
